We have added a new series of short articles on services and scripts for your own URL shortener.
The first article gives an overview of services hosting your URL shortener. The following articles discuss several self-hosted open source scripts.
In detail, these scripts are tr.im, YOURLS, PHP-pastebin, polr, URL Shortener and kissa.be.
Demonstrations of Services and Scripts
We provide fully functional demonstrations for most of them:
In detail, the series consists of 5 parts:
Part 1: Subscribing to a Service for an URL Shortener
Part 2: Self-Hosted Scripts for an URL Shortener: tr.im
Part 3: Self-Hosted Scripts for an URL Shortener: YOURLS
Part 4: Self-Hosted Scripts for an URL Shortener: PHP Pastebin
Part 5: Self-Hosted Scripts for an URL Shortener: polr and Others
Enjoy reading and trying the demos!
WOW – The crnch.it URL Shortener has just launched!
While the kitten (kt.tn) URL Shortener (which we had launched about one year ago) is based on the tr.im software (which was written in Ruby on Rails) by Nambu Network, Inc. (now defunct) / Eric Woodward, we now looked into YOURLS, a nice set of PHP scripts to host your own URL Shortener.
As for the desktop-oriented design of our previous URL shortener kitten: we had decided to simply keep it. This is because we like the idea of putting Nambu’s former tr.im site into a “time-bubble”. But it is (much) different for crnch.it: YOURLS is still being actively developed at github.
So for crnch.it, we are moving toward a new, responsive design based on Twitter’s bootstrap. Although we know that there is probably much work left to do, we are positive that you will already like it. Well, here it is!
This is for you (and for free of course), so PLEASE ENJOY 🙂
